Course Content

Perfect competition. Monopoly and price discrimination. Monopolistic competition. Basic concepts of game theory. Theories of oligopoly. Factor markets. An introduction to general equilibrium theory and welfare economics. Externalities. Public goods. Asymmetric information.

Course Objective and Fulfillments to be obtained by Students

 

The aim of this course is to introduce students, at an intermediate level, to the fundamental concepts and techniques of microeconomic analysis. This course also aims to train students to the point where they can handle specialist courses in economics (for example labour economics, industrial economics, international economics) in their third year. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate their understanding of: (i) The characteristics of different market structures and their implications for the behavior of the firm; (ii) The basics concepts and issues in general equilibrium theory and welfare economics; and (iii) The nature of market failures other than imperfect competition such as externalities, public goods and information asymmetries.
