Welcome to Economics at Hacettepe.

The Department of Economics was founded in 1967 by Professor Osman Okyar, one of the earliest leading scholars of profession in Turkey. In 1982, the Department became a part of newly founded Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences.

The Department of Economics has four academic programs, two under-graduate and two post-graduate:

  • Bachelor's program in Turkish since 1969
  • Master's program since 1973
  • Doctoral program since 1976
  • Bachelor's program in English since 1993

The aim of Bachelor's programs is to graduate young economists to be employed both in private and in public sectors. In public sector, alumni have been employed in prestigious government units such as the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey, Turkish Treasury, Capital Markets Board, State Planning Organization, Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency, and the Secretariat General for EU Affairs. The aim of Master's program is to provide students with the core of economic theory and research methods in advanced levels. Doctoral program aims to raise young scholars to universities.

There are four research subfields in the Department:

  • Economic Policy
  • Economic Theory
  • Economic History
  • Economic Development and International Economics

Faculty members publish articles in domestic and international journals and participate in domestic and international conferences and congresses. In recent years, many of faculty members have published articles in SSCI journals. Some faculty members have been granted by The Scientific & Technological Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) in some research projects.
